Good News! Now in their 17th Year, the prestigious 2010 BPM and Workflow Excellence Awards are open for submission. All details here: www.BPMF.org

Your BPM or Workflow project could be a global winner = YOU and YOUR COMPANY gain international recognition as an industry leader and innovator.

Winners and finalists of the prestigious annual Global Awards for Excellence in BPM and Workflow have become sought-after industry speakers and their case studies have appeared in multiple publications.

You and your company deserve recognition for successfully using BPM to gain competitive advantage within your industry.

Winners and finalists receive additional recognition by having their case studies published in the annual volume of Excellence in Practice (see discount offer below*).

To be recognized as winners, companies must address three critical areas: excellence in innovation, excellence in implementation and excellence in strategic impact to the organization.

Submission information is here:
Global Awards for innovation and excellence in BPM & workflow implementations.

• Submission Deadline: September 24, 2010
-----------------
• Finalists Announced: October 10, 2010
-----------------
• Awards Ceremony: November, 2010 (TBC)

If your company previously submitted an entry, you should know that we welcome re-submissions, please note, however, that major changes must have taken place since the last submission (for example; significant scope change, new users, new applications, or introduction of new technology). Submission must detail changes and motivation.

Remember - the awards are to user organizations whose case studies demonstrate excellence in Business Process Management (BPM) and workflow. Particular attention is paid to implementations that support processes extending beyond the corporate boundaries to support an enhanced experience for customers, suppliers, trading partners etc.

Awards Rules, Criteria and Overview

There are five regions. Each region receives one Gold and one Silver Award, but the judges reserve the right to withhold naming regional gold or silver winners if submissions are not of sufficiently high standard.

1. Europe (includes Eastern Europe, Russia etc)
2. Middle East and Africa
3. North America (includes USA, Mexico and Canada )
4. Pacific Rim (includes Asia, Australia and Far East)
5. South and Central America (includes Caribbean)

Winners and finalists receive additional recognition by having their case studies published in the annual volume of Excellence in Practice.

Share your expertise and knowledge!

Working with members of WfMC, OMG and other leading participants in the creation of BPMN 2.0, we are assembling the “BPMN 2.0 Handbook.” Planned to be the first in an annual series, it will be published together with a companion CD to feature BPMN supporters/vendors.

We invite papers from members and colleagues in our industry to contribute a paper to the BPMN 2.0 Handbook.

Content guidelines and submission form: http://www.futstrat.com/books/bpmnhandbook_call1.php

Deadline to submit an abstract is September 20. The Advisory Board will make their selections by September 30. If you are selected, your paper must be completed by October 30.

The top rated 20 to 25 papers will be selected for print publication (physical size limitations) with the possibility that further highly-rated submissions will be published in Digital Format only on the Companion CD and in the Digital Edition.

This new annual series will make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge within this industry. The participating authors (and their organizations) receive worldwide recognition for their respective roles as leaders at the forefront of business process technology, its growth, evolution and implementation.

There is no fee to submit a paper and you may submit up to two different abstracts.

As you know, the book will be published together with a companion CD to feature BPMN supporters/solution providers. This CD will contain BPMN and XPDL Verification/Validation files, webinars, videos, product specs, tools, free/trial modelers etc. This gives readers exposure to an even larger resource on BPMN 2.0 and XPDL than a book alone can offer.

You do not have to be a contributing book author in order to sponsor material on the CD. To have your product, service or other material featured on the CD, please contact me directly.

Thank you, Layna Fischer, Publisher

XPDL 2.2: Incorporating BPMN 2.0 Process Modeling Extensions
by Robert M. Shapiro, WfMC and Global 360, USA

This important paper in the new 2010 BPM and Workflow Handbook discusses current additions and changes, including:
  • Pools and Lanes
  • Call Activity/Re-usable Sub-Process
  • Event Sub-Process
  • Event Types
  • Data Objects, Data Flow and Input/Output Specifications

Robert Shapiro reports:

"In June 2009 the OMG voted to adopt the BPMN 2.0 specification which then entered the Finalization Task Force (FTF) phase. At that time the WfMC initiated work revising XPDL2.1. The new version, XPDL2.2, is described in this paper.
As of March 1, 2010 the FTF was still hard at work. Many issues in BPMN2.0 remain unresolved. If the FTF completes its task in June, the original objective, it will do so only by deferring a large number of issues. The principle reason for this is that many new ideas were introduced that extend or change what was in the previous version, BPMN1.2.
XPDL2.2 is intended as a preliminary release which supports the graphical extensions to process modeling contained in BPMN2.0. In fact, the BPMN specification addresses four different areas of modeling, referred to as:
• Process Modeling
• Process Execution
• BPEL Process Execution
• Choreography Modeling
We focus only on Process Modeling. Within that we define several sub-classes to support process interchange between tools. This is discussed in a later section of this paper."

Spotlight on Business Intelligence

Why focus on Business Intelligence?

Keith Swenson, WfMC Vice Chair says, "Regardless of whether you design a fixed definition in advance for a predictable process, or whether a case manager extends the plan for an unpredictable process while working, the results can be analyzed with process intelligence technology. Retrospective analysis can tell us if the processes are going according to plan, and can tell us if the plan itself is a good idea. In cases where work was performed without the guidance of a process, process mining, also known as automatic process discovery, can tell us what the process has actually been without having to involve people in lengthy, and error prone, interviews. Process mining can tell us what is efficient and inefficient about an existing work pattern, and it can give us a jump-start on new BPM implementation efforts when no previous process definition exists.

"Business (Process) Intelligence is a field that is just beginning to show very promising results. Eleven independent chapters bring us views of this topic. After all, in the end, it is process analytics that keeps us all honest. Because it can measure performance, Business Process Intelligence is a critical part of delivering on the promise of improving performance of the business."
